RoHS stands for: Restriction Of certain Hazardous Substances.

RoHS usually targets these substances:

Four heavy metals: chromium hexavalent, lead, mercury, cadmium, and their compounds

Two brominated families: Polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)

four phthalates : Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), Di(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)

RoHS testing is a laboratory analysis used to check whether electrical and electronic products contain restricted hazardous substances above the legal limits. These substances include lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, certain brominated flame retardants, and specific phthalates. RoHS testing helps manufacturers, importers, and distributors demonstrate product compliance before placing products on regulated markets.

RoHS testing is not always explicitly mandatory, but RoHS compliance is required for many electrical and electronic products placed on the EU market. Companies must be able to demonstrate that their products comply with the applicable substance restrictions. Testing is often used when supplier documentation is incomplete, materials are high-risk, or additional evidence is needed for technical documentation.

Standard RoHS testing usually covers ten restricted substances: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, PBDE, DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DIBP. Most substances are limited to 0.1% by weight in homogeneous material, while cadmium is limited to 0.01%.

RoHS testing may be relevant for electrical and electronic equipment such as consumer electronics, appliances, lighting products, cables, control equipment, medical devices, monitoring instruments, toys with electronic functions, and industrial electronics. Products with complex bills of materials often require a combination of supplier declarations, documentation review, and targeted testing.

RoHS testing is one method used to support RoHS compliance. RoHS compliance is the broader process of confirming that the product meets applicable legal requirements, including substance restrictions, technical documentation, declarations of conformity, CE marking where applicable, and supplier evidence. Testing alone may not be sufficient if documentation is incomplete.

RoHS testing timelines depend on the number of samples, materials, substances, and laboratory methods required. A simple screening project may be faster, while a full product assessment with dismantling, homogeneous material identification, and confirmatory testing may take longer. The best timeline is determined after reviewing the product, BOM, and compliance objective.

RoHS test report generally includes sample identification, tested materials, test methods, restricted substances analyzed, measured concentrations, reporting limits, and a conclusion for each tested material. The report may also include photographs, sample preparation details, and laboratory accreditation information, depending on the scope of work.

RoHS-like requirements exist in several jurisdictions outside the EU, including China, South Korea, Turkey, the UAE, and other markets. Requirements may differ by country, including scope, labeling, documentation, exemptions, and enforcement. Companies selling internationally should verify the applicable RoHS or hazardous-substance rules for each target market.

PTS Testing Lab can help determine whether RoHS testing is needed, identify high-risk materials, review supplier documentation, coordinate laboratory testing, interpret test results, and prepare compliance evidence. This helps companies avoid unnecessary testing while building a stronger RoHS technical file for customers, auditors, and market access requirements.
